This notice was issued to all licensees and certificatees authorized to handle uranium hexafluoride in 30-inch and 48-inch diameter cylinders to alert them to incidents in which packing nuts on one-inch cylinder valves were found to be cracked. The cracking problem has been observed only in CDA 636 alloy nuts on valves supplied by Hunt Valve Company, Inc. MR Number: 3-97-0069 Zion 1 2 Date: 05/11/97 Zion,Illinois 10 CFR 73.71 1 HOUR TELECON TO ENS Dockets: 50-295,50-304 PWR/W-4-LP,PWR/W-4-LP Subject: ATTEMPTED INTRUSION INTO THE PROTECTED AREA Discussion: At 4:40 a.m. on Sunday, May 11, 1997, an intoxicated Navy Great Lakes Naval Base trainee, thinking he was returning to his barracks at the Great Lakes facility, climbed the outer fence at Zion Station into the isolation zone between the two fences. He caused an alarm on the Protected Area alarm system and armed guards responded. They apprehended the individual who was turned over to the local police and charged with criminal trespass, a misdemeanor. The individual was taken by ambulance to a local hospital for the treatment of lacerations received while climbing and falling from the outer fence. Security management representatives interviewed the individual and determined that there was no malevolent intent. The individual was later returned to military authorities.
