The contamination was about 1500 disintegrations per minute on the hands and was easily removed by washing. The individual was attempting to remove the Ni-63 foil contained in the detector unit of a gas chromatograph prior to disposal of the remainder of the unit when the contamination occurred. Rough handling during the removal probably contributed to the release of a small amount of contamination. The foil contains about 8 millicuries of Ni-63. Nickel-63 is a weak beta emitter and the contamination caused essentially no dose to the individual's hands. While internal exposure is unlikely, the licensee plans to conduct bioassay measurements on the contaminated individual and another individual who assisted in the removal. The laboratory has been surveyed and is free of contamination. The source has been contained and will be properly disposed. The licensee is reviewing the removal in detail since the individuals apparently did not follow the instructions they were given regarding the handling of the source. The licensee will provide a written report, including corrective actions, within five days as required by the license. Regional Action: Review report when received and verify corrective actions during next scheduled inspection. Contact: John Kinneman (610)337-5252 _
