The badge reading indicated 93.0 rem dose. The licensee believes that the badge could have been contaminated with Phosphorus-32 during a spill of radioactive material early in the quarter. Date: 09/18/96 Craft,North Carolina Subject: SUSPECTED RADIOACTIVE MATERIAL IN SCRAP METAL Discussion: North Carolina, an Agreement State, notified the NRC Headquarters Operations Officer on September 16, 1996, that Ameristeel, Inc. of Craft, North Carolina had received a railcar on September 5, 1996, that alarmed the facility's gate radiation monitor. The highest radiation monitor reading was 2280 counts per minute (Background was 2010 counts per minute). The car originated from Industrial Metal Processors in Greenville, South Carolina. The car is quarantined at Ameristeel awaiting authorization from the State of North Carolina to return the car to the originator. Ameristeel also notified the State of South Carolina, Division of Radioactive Materials. The State of South Carolina indicated that they would survey the railcar upon its return to the State.
