The material was a glass capsule containing 7.5 millicuries of chronium-51. The event occurred at about 3:00 a.m. on July 9, 1996, and the capsule could not be located until daylight because the event occurred on an outside driveway at the Fed Ex facility. The broken capsule was located after daylight. Four contaminated spots were located during the survey and clean up of the area. The area was decontaminated and only fixed contamination remains. The remaining radiation level is reported to be less than 0.5 millrem per hour. Federal Express plans to take no further action; the residual radioactivity on a driveway will be allowed to decay since personnel are not around the area routinely and the remaining material appears to be fixed. All packing material and the crushed capsule were repackaged and returned to the orginal shipper for disposal. There was no other equipment or personnel contamination. Regional Action: The Region will followup and close out with the State of Tennessee. Contact: R. Woodruff (404)331-5545 _
