MR Number: 3-96-0075 Dresden 2 3 Date: 07/09/96 Morris,Illinois Dockets: 50-237,50-249 BWR/GE-3,BWR/GE-3 Subject: UNPLANNED INTAKES OF RADIOACTIVE MATERIAL Discussion: On July 8, 1996, during the day shift, a labor crew was erecting scaffolding and shielding in the Unit 2/3 Radioactive Waste storage area. After completing the initial task, the crew was instructed by a foreman to empty the contents of a high integrity container for segregation and ultimate offsite burial. Some of the material removed included assorted activated metals. The radiation work permit the crew was working under did not permit the removal and movement of the activated metal. Subsequently, the crew members alarmed the whole body friskers upon attempting to exit the radiologically restricted area. Two laborers were determined to receive small intakes of radioactive material. The initial whole body count data indicated that the intakes ranged from 60 to 200 nanocuries of cobalt-60. Regional Action: Regional Radiation Specialists are monitoring the licensee's response to this event. A followup onsite review will be conducted July 12, 1996. Contact: R. J. CANIANO (708)829-9804 _
