Information Notice 96-52, "CRACKED INSERTION RODS ON TROXLER MODEL 3400  
SERIES PORTABLE MOISTURE DENSITY GAUGES," was issued on September 26,    
1996.                                                                    
                                                                         
This notice is issued to alert all portable gauge licensees and vendors  
to the potential for cracks to develop in the insertion rod of Troxler   
3400 series moisture density gauges.  If not detected early, cracks may  
propagate, eventually leading to complete failure of the insertion rod   
and release of the radioactive material.  The notice provides information
on how to detect cracks and how to avoid crack initiation.
