Subject: NEWS MEDIA INTEREST IN SPENT FUEL SHIPMENT                      

Discussion:

An article in "The State" (a Columbia, South Carolina based newspaper)   
reported that a second shipment of Spent Fuel Rods was enroute to the    
Sunny Point Military Ocean Terminal in Brunswick County, S.C.  The       
article referred to the Blue Ridge Environmental Defense League as the   
source of the information.  The article identified the shipment route to 
be by rail from Sunny Point to the Savannah River Site, and to contain 99
rods.                                                                    
                                                                         
The NRC is aware of planned future shipments and is evaluating the       
shipping routes in the U.S.  The NRC, Region II will accompany any       
shipments made.
