The Stop Work order was based on repetitive problems encountered with crimping operations. The recently identified crimping problems (i.e., inadequately implemented corrective action) which led to this all occurred on the second shift. Jaudon (404)331-5583 PRIORITY ATTENTION REQUIRED MORNING REPORT - REGION II JANUARY 5, 1995 Licensee/Facility: Notification: MR Number: 2-95-0003 Nucor Steel Date: 01/05/95 Darlington,South Carolina Subject: Radioactive Material in Scrap Shipment Reportable Event Number: N/A Discussion: On January 4, 1995, a representative of the State of South Carolina Bureau of Radiological Health informed the Region II office that radioactive material had been detected on January 3, 1995, in two railcars containing scrap steel. The railcars, which exhibited radiation readings of 0.09 mR/hr and 0.15 mR/hr were returned to the original shippers (Jackson Metal, Chesapeake, Virginia, and Peanut City Iron and Steel, Suffolk, Virginia) under an exemption granted by the Department of Transportation to the Conference of Radiation Control Program Directors. The Commonwealth of Virginia has been informed and will followup with the shippers of this material to identify the type of radioactive material involved so as to establish jurisdiction and ensure proper disposal. Regional Action: Region II will coordinate with the Commonwealth of Virginia on followup on this event. The Office of State Programs and the EPA have been notified.
