The load was returned because it caused the radiation monitoring system at Luntz to alarm. The load consists of five 55 gallon drums of shredded o-rings from aircraft engines, which according to the representative, may contain magnesium-thorium. The o-rings were obtained from American Welding Company which ceased business operation approximately two years ago. Using a micro-R meter, the Warren Scrap Company representative determined that the maximum radiation level at a distance of 2 feet from the drums was less than 1 mR/hr. The drums have been segregated from other scrap material at the company. Regional Action: In accordance with the draft Federal Radiological Response Plan, Region III notified the EPA of this matter. NMSS was also notified. Contact: B. J. HOLT (708)829-9836
