Wayne,Indiana TEL.CONTACT FROM THE ST. OF IN./NRC Dockets: 99990063 License No: NONE Subject: RADIATION ALARM SET OFF AT SCRAP METAL COMPANY Reportable Event Number: N/A Discussion: On the morning of 8/30/94, a truck from Mid-America Shredders carrying scrap metal set off a radiation alarm at Omni-Source, a scrap metal company. Omni- Source contacted the State of Indiana which responded on the morning of 8/31/94. An inspection of the truck indicated maximum surface radiation levels of 800 uR/hr. Further examination by the State of Indiana personnel indicated two boxes contained some "slag". Surface radiation levels on the boxes were approximately 20 mR/hr. A sample was taken back to the State of Indiana's lab. Gamma-spectroscopy of a sample determined the sample contained thorium and thorium daughters. The State of Indiana called Region III on 8/31/94. Omni-Source refused the receive the entire shipment of scrap metal. The truck returned to Mid-America Shredders on 8/31/94. After the truck returned to Mid-America Shredders in St. Genevieve, Missouri, employees of the company determined that 3 boxes of material had surface levels ranging from 12 - 18 mR/hr. The material is being kept in a shed which is locked at Mid-America Shredders. The three boxes originated from Langlay Recycles in Kansas City, Missouri.
